2020.10.10 04:37 Myattemptatlogic The answer to the question 'What should I play?'

I don't have the wisdom or perspective of someone who's played for years, but I do have the perspective of someone who likes to see measurable progress, and preferably quickly, which is sometimes hard in something as subjective as learning an instrument. I started playing bass in late August, and I've tabbed out 183 songs I can now play well enough to not embarrass myself. Because as long as the number of songs I know increases, I can fend off the existential dread a bit longer.

There's also a playlist called Bedroom Pop that has some pretty consistently funky basslines. Or you could always go to basstabs and try to tab something out for someone else. Turn on a Spotify playlist of a genre you like, or one you hate. I learned pop songs all week and I didn't hate it. Learn full albums. Learn every song by your famous bassist. Turn on a playlist of drum backing tracks and play until something sounds neat. Use a metronome. Or don't, I'm not your dad. Probably.

2020.09.13 19:59 nschmidt54 Happy 15th to Nothing Is Sound!

My favorite Switchfoot album came out 15 years ago today. The one thing I was reminded of while listening to it through today was how underrated Easier Than Love is. I know that it gets overlooked a lot with its lyrical content but it is actually an excellent song both musically and lyrically in my opinion.

2020.07.06 14:32 ND_PC Total Madness Player Playlists: Aneesa Ferreira

Happy Monday and welcome to the newest addition to my playlist tribute series for Total Madness!
This playlist is part of a series I've been making for each player on Total Madness as he or she is eliminated (or eventually wins). Within a self-imposed limit of 25 songs (or so), I aim to make a playlist that encapsulates a player's profile (i.e. Tori was a collegiate soccer player), personality (i.e. Nelson is accidentally funny), and narrative (i.e. Kailah cheated with Bear and then asked to be put into elimination). Usually, I try to find songs whose lyrics or mood accomplish all this, but in some cases, the title may be enough. For vets, the playlist typically rushes through the first part of their career and then focuses more on this season's narrative in order to be more season-specific.
Today I present to you the Aneesa Playlist! (Link is to Spotify.) Since it was a hit last week with Nany's playlist, I again made sure to sprinkle in some songs that MTV has used during various points in Aneesa's career.
I took the same approach on this playlist as I did with my Jordan playlist, actually starting out by making two playlists (about 60 songs total). I made one about Aneesa's general vibe and one about how she's entered the latter portion of her career and isn't quite the same as she once was. I merged these two lists and, although the two contrasting moods are starkly apparent, I think it does well to capture what Aneesa once was on the show and what she is now. This season, Aneesa supplied a bunch of great confessionals and even better facial expressions. While I'm not sure I was able to reflect every bit of that with this playlist, the notion of "I'm old enough to know how ridiculous this is" plays thematically throughout the list, particularly the second half. I wouldn't so much call this a "narrative playlist" as I have tried to do with so many of the other competitors, but I think it warrants a listen in the intended order if only to better feel the contrast between the playlist's two primary moods: chill AF kick-back and optimistic existential crisis.
I love feedback, so please comment with any thoughts you have on this playlist or any suggestions you might have for future playlists - I continue to add to these playlists as people comment on my old posts. I'm still hoping to create the Nelson playlist (whenever that might be) primarily through crowdsourcing, so keep those suggestions coming!
If you want to listen to any of my other playlists, here you go! (Asaf, Jenn, CT, Ashley, Jay, Tori, Jordan, Bear, Big T, Kailah, Jenna, Wes, Mattie, Swaggy, Nany) Since last week was a double elimination, the Josh playlist will come out on Wednesday ahead of this week's episode.

2020.06.24 00:49 Xkrantz Top 20 Best songs of 2004

Okay you guys its time for my top 20 best songs of 2004. Now my picks for this best list will have a few controversial picks here and there. If you disagree with me, thats fine. If you agree with me, thats great too, just take what you will with a grain of salt. So without further a do, lets get it Started in here, we're counting down the top 20 best songs of 2004. I decided to put honorable mentions on this list because there are alot more good songs in 2004 than bad songs. I put my top 20 worst songs of 2004 up with no honorable mentions because there were a lot less bad songs from 2004
  1. Beyoncé - Naughty Girl
  2. The Black Eyed Peas - Hey Mama
  3. Nina Sky Feat. Jabba - Move ya Body
  4. Maroon 5 - She Will Be Loved
  5. Yellowcard - Ocean Avenue
  6. Trick Daddy Feat. Lil Jon & Twista - Let's Go
  7. T.I - Bring em Out
  8. Blink 182 - Down
  9. Avril Lavigne - My Happy Ending
  10. Switchfoot - Dare You To Move
  11. Ciara Feat. Petey Pablo - Goodies
  12. Hoobastank - The Reason
  13. Twista Feat. Kanye West & Jamie Foxx - Slow Jamz
  14. Ying Yang Twins Feat. Trick Daddy - What's Happenin
Okay remember when I said that I don;t hate Green Day? Well I do think American idiot is one of the worst albums that this band has ever made? yes I am in the minority
  1. The Black-Eyed Peas - Lets Get It Started
  2. Destiny's Child - Loose My Breath
  3. The Black Eyed Peas - Let's Get It Started
  4. Kanye West - Jesus Walks
  5. Blink 182 - Feeling This
Okay I know you were expecting I Miss You to be on here because that is the most popular off of their self titled album but I have always preferred this song. This is hands down the best blink 182 song of 2004. Mark Hoppus's singing is beautiful, Tom Delogune's singing could use a little work, but I really do like him shouting and speaking during the verses. The guitar is just amazing, especially during the bridge where Tom crunches the guitar like a boss. Travis Barker is amazing on the drums and one of the best drumming performances of the entire year. This song subject matter is a bit questionable yeah but I will interpret the subject matter as a simple relationship. All in all, this song is the best punk song of 2004. However its still not number 1. Well then, the question remains, what could actually be this song? What could actually beat my favorite punk rock band of all time? Well, we shall get to that, but first here is a BUTT LOAD of honorable mentions.
Honorable Mentions
  1. Kelly Clarkson - Breakaway
Well here is my obvious choice for number 1.
Okay I know you were expecting Yeah by Usher to be on this list, however this really is the best song of 2004. I love everything about this song. The lyrics are beautiful, with the huge sense of moving on from your tragic past. Kelly Clarkson didn ;t let me down with her singing voice. This is some of the best singing of her entire career. The melody is just gorgeous, and one of the most iconic melodies of the entire decade. The production is incredible, the violins, the drums, the guitar, this is by far the most beautifully composed songs that I have ever heard from Kelly Clarkson. All in all, I've got nothing else to say but this song is really the best song of 2004. No wait scratch that, this some of the best songs EVER MADE. Now my top 20 worst songs of 2005 needs some sprucing up, so I'll get that fixed and you'll be able to hear my full opinions of each song on that list. So stay tuned for that.

2020.05.11 02:00 threeunicorns [CONTEST] guess the song

[closed]
So, a simple one for you lovely folks today!
Guess the song that resonates with me most as Mum to my mini humans.
Your clue is that it’s by the band Switchfoot. You’ll have to listen to the lyrics carefully, and it mostly applies to my two oldest and something they struggle with daily, although for different reasons.
Bonus points if you work out what the struggle is.
There’s only one rule today really - DBAD.
Open to one and all, although if you’re outside of the US I’ll be sending a gift card and you’ll have to be comfortable sending me your email address if that’s the case. If you’re in the US, have something $15 and under on your list.
I’ll wrap this up sometime on Tuesday morning (12 April 2020) so you’ve all got time to guess.

2020.05.06 06:11 goodnightkevinfan4 Wait...has Nothing Is Sound been brilliant all this time and I totally missed it? (Yes.)

So, I've been a lifelong Switchfoot fan. I've listened to every song, devoured every album, dove into every side project from every member of the band. And somehow, I have managed to avoid really noticing just how good Nothing Is Sound is.
I've always found Nothing Is Sound to be a good album. You know, "pretty good". I've always loved the standout songs: Stars, Lonely Nation, Politicians, and We Are One Tonight, but I was never really able to fully get into this particular record. Then, recently, I decided to give it another listen. Except this time I decided to take a deeper dive and read the lyrics as I listened. And suddenly, I realized that not only is this one of Switchfoot's most poetic albums, it's Switchfoot at their most punk rock and disaffected.
My favorite Switchfoot song has always been Meant To Live. It's the song that got me into Switchfoot and it's theme of desiring more than this world has to offer has always deeply resonated with me. Nothing Is Sound takes this theme and runs with it, crafting an Ecclesiastical album bemoaning the fallen, empty nature of our world.
In "Happy Is a Yuppie Word" they directly quote said Biblical book of Ecclesiastes:
"Everything fails Everything runs its course A time and a place, for all of this love and war Everyone buys, everyone's got a price And nothing is new When will all the failures rise When will us failures rise, rise!
Happy is a yuppie word Nothing in the world could fail me now It's empty as an argument I'm running down a life that won't cash out Happy is a yuppie word Blessed is the man who's lost it all Happy is a yuppie word"
I found myself spellbound by the raw honesty of The Blues:
"Does justice ever find you? Do the wicked never lose? Is there any honest song to sing besides these blues? And nothing is okay until the world caves in Until the world caves in"
Those words perhaps resonate with me more in the midst of a global pandemic than they might have previously.
I was gobsmacked listening to the scathing indictment of our sex obsessed culture in "Easier Than Love", a song I had previously never paid much attention to. In fact, I thought it was called "Easy To Love" and thought it was a song about a significant other. But reading these lyrics revealed one of Switchfoot's harshest songs:
"Everyone's a lost romantic, Since our love became a kissing show Everyone's a Casanova, Come and pass me the mistletoe
Everyone's been scared to death of dying here alone
She is easier than love Is easier than life It's easier to fake and smile and bribe
It's easier to leave It's easier to lie It's harder to face ourselves at night Feeling alone, What have we done? What is the monster we've become?
Where is my soul?
Numb"
In some ways, this is Switchfoot's darkest, bleakest albums, but in others, their most hopeful. Lyrics like "crooked souls trying to stand up straight" and "I'll fail, I'll fall, I'll fail you all" and "when I look at the stars I see myself" serve as balm to my tired and weary soul. This album, like most Switchfoot albums, helps me to remember I am not alone in my flawed and fallen condition. It helps me remember that this world is fundamentally broken, always has been, but there's a hope greater than this tiny cracked globe.
And so, I now find myself loudly, painfully, joyfully belting out along with Jon at the top of my lungs "Nothing is sound!".

2020.04.20 21:56 happyisayuppieword An Alternate Take on "Oxygen": Why it's important to humanize your heroes. Yes, even Jon Foreman...

Hola, amigos! Hope y'all are havin' a great quarantine and staying home.
I'm responding to the very recent post pertaining to the meaning of "Oxygen", posted a few days ago. So why am I creating a new post rather than just commenting on the original? Well, couple of reasons. One's practical: A new post garners more visibility. Haha. But another's because I think the discussion on the original post, while intriguing and valuable, really quite misses a rather obvious point, and I'm anxious for further discussion.
What if Jon Foreman really did experience something like a breakup?
Because that's the option that nobody really seemed to take seriously in the original post, and to be completely honest, I believe the preponderance of publicly available evidence is that Jon Foreman really did experience marital difficulties over the last few years.
To wit:
we both started with a broken heart
admit there's a problem, that's a start
i want to start healing
yeah, everybody wants to rock & roll!
but a couple of years and it takes a toll
i want to start healing, healing
That's from 2016, as y'all know. I heartily recommend giving that entire song a re-listen, and really contemplating the lyrics. Is it a coincidence that Jon's brother-in-law, David Dark, has expressed multiple times on Twitter that this is his favourite Switchfoot song ever? I mean, Jon's being pretty explicit here about how the touring life isn't necessarily conducive to healthy personal relationships.
And then we get to the songs on Native Tongue:
I am yours and yours alone
Forgive me for my wandering on my own
I'm a prodigal soulAnd I want to come home
I can't make it alone, yeah
Won't you bring me home?
Tried to start on something new
Tried to blame myself on you
But my nightmares all came true
I felt so unsteady
I still see your face when I close my eyes and
I think about you wide awake at night and
How far do I have to go to realize
What I know already?
Look, I get the song invokes religious imagery, of course. And we all know that Jon loves layering meanings. But these lyrics make the most sense to me in the context of Jon's, well, prodigal life that he lives. He's always leaving his wife and kids to go out on the road. So reading it straightforwardly as Jon's ruminations on coming home to his wife makes a lot of sense.
you're still there in the back of my mind
in that sunset together
looking back, i see the warning signs
calling us now or never
I mean, Jon pretty much spends this entire song expressing the difficulty of love. Maybe it's personal, maybe it's not?
you were there at the door
you said, i don't know how to say this
but i want more
i don't know how you're gonna take this
can't go back to the first
losing stories like leap years
fake smiles and worse
just a ghost left to be near
i'm not sure how this works
what do you want me to say, dear?
all i know is it hurts
all i know is it hurts
I'm just sayin', yes, maybe Jon could be invoking a hypothetical scenario here. But doesn't it make a lot of sense for Jon's wife to want something more (hehe) out of their relationship, given that he's typically away from home 4-6 months of the year? I don't think any of us know how difficult that must be, for anyone in the music industry. Is it a total coincidence that all these songs came out of their yearlong hiatus at home? Drew's been candid on social media about how the hiatus revealed some deep rifts that had been festering in his personal and family life.
There are countless stars in the sky tonight
And the city glows with a million lights
But of all this bright that I see tonight
You're the one I want
There are countless memories lost, forgotten, thrown into the wind
There are countless words I wish I never said
There are countless explorations that I'm longing to begin
But you're the one I want
You're the one I want
And then, of course, the album ends on a really raw, personal note. Pretty sure this might be the most stripped-down song in their discography. The imagery really evokes some of Jon's prior lyricism. "Faust, Midas, and Myself" takes a really interesting twist if you read it as Jon invoking the imagery of gold as a metaphor for women ("yeah, you could have your pick of pretty things"). I don't think it's an accident that the song ends with him talking about his wife in her nightrobe ("what was once routine was now the perfect joy"), or that the following song constitutes pretty much the most straightforward love song Jon had ever penned on a Switchfoot record to that date ("in this life, you're my only one!"). Also, consider the lyrics in "When We Collide": "this world is full of fool's gold//sparks that catch the eye//but yours is the only pair of lips that i want pressed up next to mine". So Native Tongue ends with a simple articulation of Jon's commitment to his wife.
I am not saying that the meaning of the album isn't multifaceted. Nor am I making the case that it must be primarily about marital difficulties. I am not arguing that Jon actually broke up with his wife or anything. Honestly, it's really none of our business either way.
Maybe it's all abstract, hypothetical! Nothing personal to see here... And don't get me wrong, I certainly don't deny the more universal takes on love throughout the album (title track as case-in-point). But I do confidently assert that viewing "Oxygen" in the context of the record at large, in addition to the broader stage of the band's career at the time of its writing, really renders the lens of marital difficulties as a very plausible interpretation. In my view, the most plausible. I see Native Tongue as Switchfoot's breakup album. I kind of informally made that case in my review of Native Tongue for Sputnik last year. Some of y'all might appreciate that review. (:
I assert that we've all been conditioned over the years by Jon's propensity to talk about LOVE with a capital "L". You know, a 20,000 foot view of things. Honestly, Switchfoot's rarely released many strict love songs over the years, compared to a lot of bands. So I get it. I really do. It's hard to conceptualize that maybe, this time around, the themes could be as personal as they are also transcendent and universal.
I also believe that many of us fans probably resist this particular interpretation of the lyrics because we all share a pretty lofty view of Mr. Foreman. He's certainly a hero of mine, insofar as someone you don't actually know and never will know personally can be a heroic figure. And maybe it's hard to accept that one of your heroes could be flawed. Even though he's been rather candid about his "fatal flaws" for a long time!
I'm reminded of the drama surrounding Relient K's releases of Forget and Not Slow Down and Collapsible Lung, back in the day (I feel old!). If you're not familiar, basically the first constituted a breakup album about their frontman's failed engagement. And the active rumour at the time was that Matt cheated on his fiancee. Again, nobody's business. But lots of fans refused to ever consider it as a possibility. Then the next album dropped... I dunno, maybe Matt Thiessen just really felt like singing about hypothetical one-night stands ("I was with women I didn't know") and making an entire album about it. Right after he penned an album about a failed engagement. No connection, right?
I'm also reminded of a fairly recent movie that I absolute adore, entitled The Last Jedi. Controversial take, right? But what spoke to me the most in that movie, among many things, was its take on the nature of heroism. Luke Skywalker is a hero precisely because he is deeply, fatally flawed. I think people have a really hard time accepting the humanity of deified public figures. Whether it's Luke Skywalker or Jon Foreman or whoever. But to me, Jon Foreman isn't my hero because he's flawless. To the contrary, I love Jon's writing because of how deeply vulnerable, honest, and personal it has always been. Jon's had the courage over the years to sing about some really heavy stuff in front of tens of thousands of people, and he doesn't shy away from his own failures and shortcomings. None of us will ever really know what "Oxygen" means to Jon, and that's okay! I still find it super cool and meaningful that he's willing to sing so candidly about a really personal topic like relational difficulties, whether they're rooted in reality or not.
What do y'all think?
So, hey. I just spent an hour psychoanalyzing someone I don't know via song lyrics. And i had a blast! Quarantine life, haha. Hope y'all enjoy, and I welcome further discussion. Especially disagreement! It's no fun when everyone has the same opinion or perspective!
TL;DR: Maybe Jon Foreman is an actual human being and not immune to problems in his personal life.

2020.04.03 21:23 nschmidt54 If Switchfoot released a second volume of "The Best Yet"...

It seems like an appropriate time in the discography where Switchfoot could release a part two to "The Best Yet" that would cover Hello Hurricane through Native Tongue. In your opinion, what songs would you like to see if they did release another volume?
Here's my list that I'd go with if they asked me to do what I wanted (just by release order):
Needle
Mess of Me
Free (one of my faves that wouldn't make the real list)
Hello Hurricane
Afterlife
Thrive
Dark Horses
Rise Above It (another sleeper)
Vice Verses
Where I Belong
Love Alone Is Worth the Fight
IWLYG (album version)
If the House Burns Down Tonight
Native Tongue
Voices (ft. Lindsey Stirling)
Joy Invincible
Wonderful Feeling (West Coast Edit)

2020.04.02 16:39 philliplennon Opinions on Native Tongue?

I'm listening to the album for the first time and I personally think that it's a solid follow-up to WTLST and I personally love songs like Let It Happen, Dig New Streams and Prodigal Soul which is one of the most honest Switchfoot songs that I've heard in a long time.
How does the album hold up for everyone else after one year?

2020.03.29 16:22 mase0013 Switchfoot songs by song position

Switchfoot songs by song position
*Nerd alert* I arranged each Switchfoot studio album song into separate albums based on their song position. For example, all of the songs in the number one position from each release are in Album #1, all of the songs in the number two position from each release in Album #2, and so on...
I always loved song #7 off each of their albums. Album #7 is DEFINITELY my favorite! which is your favorite?

2020.03.28 19:15 touch_my_tra-la-la Most riveting scenes due to the song?

Hi guys,
I write top 10 lists for an entertainment website called ScreenRant, and one that I'm about to work on is about One Tree Hill and it's music, specifically the top 10 most riveting scenes because of the music choice.
I was reading through a post of how underrated the music is on OTH, and it seems like this community has its head on straight when it comes to understanding how important the music is in this show, and how much a song can influence a scene, and vice versa
So, what are your favorite music choices in OTH? For example, I love when Audioslave’s ”I Am The Highway” plays when psycho Derek is exposed, or The Shins “Pink Bullets” during a montage ending in S1, and Sheryl Crow’s “I Shall Believe” when Haley’s mom dies.
I’d love to hear your guys’ opinions, and if I use your idea, I’ll credit your username in my article. Thanks in advance!
EDIT: Here are the choices I'm thinking of so far:
"Babe, I'm Going To Leave You" by Led Zeppelin
“Maybe Tomorrow” by Sterophonics (S01E12)
"Feeling The Moment" by Feeder
"Missing You" by Tyler Hilton
"23" by Jimmy Eat World
"Disinregration" by Jimmy Eat World
"For Blue Skies" by Strays Don't Sleep
"I Am The Highway" by Audioslave
"Re-Offender" by Travis
"Heartbeats" by Jose Gonzalez
"God Bless The Child" by Michelle Featherstone
"Lightning Crashes" by Live
"Like A Man Possessed" by The Get-Up Kids
"Many Rivers To Cross" by Jimmy Cliff
"Boston" by Augustana
"Cool Kids" by Screeching Weasel
"Non-Believer" by La Rocca
"Save You" by Matthew Perryman Jones
"Dare You To Move" by Switchfoot
"Til The Sun Turns Black" by Ray LaMontagne
"Hold You In My Arms" by Ray LaMontagne
"What Are You Afraid Of?" by West Indian Girl
"Hard To Find" by American Analog Set
”Cool Kids Keep” by American Analog Set
"Everybody's Changing" by Keane
"Inside of Love" by Nada Surf
"Say It Ain't So" by Mozella
”Wolf Like Me” by TV on The Radio
”Times Like These (Acoustic)” by Foo Fighters
”World Spins Madly On” by The Weepies
”Baba O’Reilly” by The Who
”We Belong Together” by Gavin DeGraw
”Club Foot” by Kasabian
”If She Wants Me” by Belle and Sebastian
”Alive and Amplified” by Mooney Suzuki

2019.12.24 01:02 annalouise2889 Rules for Posting Covers

Hi guys! I’m about to start posting violin and guitar covers of my favorite Switchfoot songs on here (and other bands I love), and I would also like to post them to Youtube. I don’t know about all the copyright rules though. If you’re posting a cover of a song just for fun and not putting it on Spotify or iTunes or anything, thats ok, right? Or will it get taken down? Thanks!!
